Why Does An Internet Business Fail?
Posted by Debabrata Dhar under Internet Business Strategy , Internet Marketing Strategy[3] Comments
It is a big question that probably has many reasons. Some people expect success doing nothing and some people expect success doing too many things. But most of them don’t achieve it. Does it mean Internet business is nothing but hype?
What Is The Hype About Internet Business?
We normally hear that few home-based Internet entrepreneurs including the big names are earning hundreds or even thousands of dollars each month from their own Internet business.
Inspired by these magic figures and their sales speeches, many people believe the rumors that Internet business is easy to setup and run, and earning money from it is much easier compared to other businesses and works.
The above said figures and rumors motivate hundreds of people each day to start Internet business of their own.
There is nothing wrong in it.
But, with the above inspiration and motivation, new people react in different ways.
How Most Of The Ambitious Internet Entrepreneurs React To The Hype?
A large group of people normally starts Internet business with full of enthusiasm. They register websites, write sales pages, use some tools and services and put the business on some kind of autopilot. Once it is up, they think that all work is done and expect traffic and money instantly. Unfortunately, this does not happen to most of them.
There is other group of people who try it differently. They work hard for starting and promoting their business and spend hours in front of computers trying to make their business successful. But nothing happens to them. It makes them feel frustrated about the business. Everything seems to go wrong.
So, the end result is miserable for most of them. In reality, most of the websites don’t even earn their web hosting charges.
Can We Conclude That Internet Business Is A Scam?
I can’t say it. But the reality is – Running an Internet business is just as tough as running a traditional offline business. The basic concept of the business is the same whether it is online or offline and that’s why it requires right kind of planning and efforts to make it successful. Proper planning, strategies and implementation and execution of that plans and strategies are essentially required for making the business successful.
Significant Reasons For An Internet Business To Be Failed!
Some people expect success doing nothing and some people expect success doing too many things. But most of them don’t achieve it.
Where is the problem?
I have tried to elaborate them in the following list. I think most of unsuccessful businesses have one or two or all of the following drawbacks that probably restrict them getting their success.
Not Finding A Niche
If your online business is not established on a specific niche or not targeted to provide niche-based solution, then it is obvious that it will not attain the success you desired.
When you think of starting an Internet business, it is very much important to find the proper niche of your business. A niche is a slice of a large market that contains enough people who are interested in your products or services and like to spend money purchasing them. Another characteristic of a good niche is an area that you know about and you can dominate on it or, at least, you are interested in.
There are millions of web sites and each day thousands are being added. So, if you don’t find a niche or a specific targeted audience and do not come out with products or services that essentially provide unique and value-added solution to your targeted audience, then it is very tough to get even noticed in the Internet crowd.
Not Developing USP
Another step of your success is that you develop some kind of uniqueness to your business. If you are not unique, you cannot set yourself apart from your competition.
Uniqueness can be achieved by creating “Unique Selling Proposition” which describes your identity and makes you stand out from the crowd online. USP actually builds the interest in your prospects’ mind and it is the combination magic words that enables you to attract them to your website.
If you are selling an affiliate program that thousands of your competitors are selling too at the exact same price, even then you need to be unique to beat your competition.
Not Having Proper Planning
Do you have a proper planning for your business? Have you analyzed your business so that you can develop a complete understanding of what you are doing and where you are headed?
Setting up business goals regarding budgets, projections, marketing, tracking strategies, target audience, sells, keywords all etc involves planning.
If these goals were not set properly that means if you did not plan for next seven days, next one month, next 3 months, next 12 months or even next 3 years, then it would be difficult for your business to proceed in the right direction.
As planning is important, reviewing of the plan on a regular interval is also important as your are in Internet business where technology changes so frequently.
Not Developing Proper Strategies
What is strategy? Simply speaking – strategies are the methods or techniques of execution of your planned activities. If you want to execute your plan you need to write down how you perform each and every activities that you planned. This is the simple way of making strategies.
If you didn’t work out each and every business strategy and implement them in your business at the right time then you can’t achieve your goal i.e. success in any way.
Not Knowing Your Competitors
If your business activities do not include an up-to-date analysis of your competition then you will be unable to estimate your strength and weakness. If you don’t have the clear idea about your strength and weakness with respect to your strong competition, you can’t improve your market position, can’t put more value to your business and can’t provide better solution to your niche.
The more you know about your competition, the better you’ll be able to decide how to position yourself in the market.
Not Able To Build Desire
Have your offer created enough desire in your prospect’s mind?
If you can’t create the maximum desire in your prospect’s mind then you are certainly going to miss the success.
Concentrate on building more desire by offering more benefits. Simply list those extra unique benefits for your prospects that your competitors don’t have. These extra benefits can actually differentiate you from your competitors. Try to present them more uniquely.
Not Building Relationship
“Relationship” is the fundamental keyword in any kind of business. Building continuous relationship with other entrepreneurs, marketers, prospects and customers is the most important step and it actually creates new moneymaking channels for your business continuously. It brings new references, prospects, customers and enable you spread your business to the unexplored market segments on a regular basis.
One thing you should remember – you can’t do business alone. You need to deal with real people although your business might be completely automated. It is ultimately the people that make your business successful.
That’s why, if you haven’t put continuous effort on building good relationship with all possible people in your niche then you are wasting your business opportunities.
Not Performing Targeted Promotion
Do you properly promote your product online?
A business is successful if it gets continuous flow of targeted traffic and getting traffic needs promotion.
Promotion involves long-term consistent planning and activities designed to inform your potential customers about your product. A small business’s promotional activities are:
- Creating a clear image and description of your product
- Planning your marketing campaign
- Finding out best media (including cost and scheduling calendars)
- Planning activities for reaching your potential customers
- Planning the time required for promotional effort
- Planning expenditure required for promotional effort.
Not Having Proper Systems In Place
Setting up, building and marketing an online business requires proper systems in place. For example, an online business at least has to have a subscription form, credit card acceptance mechanism, automated follow-up mechanism, promotion mechanism and tracking mechanism for it to function properly. Those Internet businesses that already started working without systems in place or, with the very least would be simply failed.
Not Able To Overcome Fear
As business involves trying out something new, it creates some kind of uncertainty. A person feels uncomfortable to step out his or her comfort zone and as a result, fear comes. It could be the fear of success or the fear of failure or the fear of trial and error. Fear actually creates mental blocks and freezes a person’s normal activities.
Not Able To Take Calculative Risk
Success involves taking calculative risks. If you want to be successful you need to overcome the fear that and take the plunge. But the natural phenomenon of human being is – all of us are scared at one time or another. We all worry we might fail. That’s why we are susceptible to take risk. If a person can’t take minimum risk then achieving success becomes daydream only.
Not Having Passion For Work
Are you excited about what you are doing? If you can’t get excited about what you are doing, how can you get others to be interested in? If you want to be really successful in a business, concentrate on only that business you really get excited about. If you’re not excited, then you are in the wrong business.
Not Having Power Of Imagination
Imagination is the reality of your future success. Imagination is needed to visualize what you are going to be, what you are going to get. If you can’t visualize the image of your success you can’t plan how to achieve that in reality, you can’t identify the methods, processes, tactics or whatever needed, to materialize your plan. Success is limited by your imagination! But, if you fail to imagine your success, you can’t be successful
Not Having Confidence
If you can’t believe in yourself, nothing can be achieved. Confidence is absolutely fundamental. It is true that you should have confidence not to need other people’s approval but to have the inner approval from yourself.
Not Having Positive Attitude
You have imagined a project that might bring success for you, you have the know-how, you have created a plan for it, and you have taken a limited amount of calculated risk to execute your tasks. Now you need to have a positive outlook or positive mindset to accomplish your goal. Your thinking, your planning and your work should be blended with your attitude so that you can achieve your success. This is the right mind set for a quality output. You’ll not succeed in any business unless your have a positive outlook.
Not Having Consistency
Whatever winning marketing strategy or plan you have, you have to be consistent in your approach. Internet marketing techniques are all about following everything consistently. Your achievement is strongly based upon your consistency.
If you want to build a large newsletter list or you want to receive a large number of traffic to your site, you have to spend time on it, you have to find out different methods, implement those methods and above all you need to work on it every single day, every week and even every month consistently.
It is not that much easy that you just jumpstart online and make tons of money. If you are not consistent in your approach then nothing happens to you.
Not Having Persistence
Persistence is required because success is rarely instantaneous. There are always obstacles and setbacks. Less persistent entrepreneurs would have quit much sooner.
So, be persistent, don’t quit. Many successful people, who were at the edge of quitting, but didn’t. They usually were on the verge of success, but they didn’t know at that time. If they had quit, they would have thrown away all the hard work and investment. As they didn’t quit, they got the success. It’s that simple.
Not Having Motivation
If you have passion for your work, then motivation comes automatically. Some people are starters but never really finish anything. They are lacking motivation. If you are not motivated then who will motivate your people?
Money is good motivator, but to earn money you need to motivate yourself everyday to do your regular task to improve every aspect of your business.
Lack Of Commitment
Commitment is the key component to any business whether it is online or offline. Without it, you will be nowhere. You have to be committed and disciplined at your work and well enough motivated to meet it.
Building day-to-day action plan, setting up checklist, scheduling their timing and strictly finishing it timely according to the schedule is the best way to meet the commitment.
Lack Of Budget
Any business needs a minimum start up and day-to-day budget. In the most cases, getting first 10% to 20% of sales need aggressive marketing. You also need to spend a certain amount each month for your marketing effort. Otherwise, it would be very difficult for you to get even noticed by your targeted prospects.
You can think of direct response paid marketing i.e. newsletter ad or Pay Per Click ad in your target market to reuse your profit percentage in marketing and get targeted traffic and sales. Remember one thing – Internet business that failed did so because they lacked budget.
Not Having Adequate Knowledge
Do you really know? – What do you want to do? How do you get it? How do you achieve your target? It is nothing but knowledge, gives you each and every answer. Knowledge actually builds confidence. Without knowledge – your chances for success are minimal. If you have any gaps in your knowledge then there will be a gap in your work and this will be reflected in the result.
Lack Of Resources
Resources like time, hardware, software, tools, services, manpower etc are as important as money for a business online. A clear reason for failure to your business is lack any of these important resources. If you lack one resource like money for instance, you have to make up for it by putting more time, which is another important resource to your business. That’s why; you need to optimize the use of all possible resources to the fullest extent to improve your business.
Lack Of Support
Support from people within your business and from outside is crucial in achieving success to your business. The real fact is you can’t run a business alone. You certainly need to depend on others to get your business run smoothly. That’s why support from your team members, subscribers, customers, business partners and family members are as important as any other resources in the business. If your support system is strong you are more advanced than your competitors.
Lack Of Credentials
A business is successful if you have something in yourself. You need to provide justification on why are you qualified to offer your product or service to people, who are supposed to be your targeted audience. Just ask yourself – why do people listen to you? Why do they purchase your products or services? What is your uniqueness? If you don’t have strong convincing answer to these questions then you might have problem convincing others.
Lack Of Professionalism
What is professionalism? It is a blend of all of your quality like your personality, quality, skills, knowledge, leadership, uniqueness, credentials, commitment, timeliness, attitude and so on… Most importantly, your business should reflect all of them in the name of professionalism. It does mean that you are a person behind your business that has all those qualities and you have built your business in such a way that a prospective customer can clearly view all of those qualities in it. So, it is important to build a business professionally from your customer’s point of view so that your prospective customers easily attracted towards it.
Have you got that professionalism?
Conclusions
I hope I am able to discuss the most significant reasons for an online business to experience the failure.
If you workout to overcome the above said drawbacks, then nothing can restrict your success in your own business online.
What is your opinion in this matter? Please feel free to comment on this.

There could be number of reasons.. One of the reasons why online businesses fail is because their sales copy does not convert? If your sales copy converts at half that of your competitors – you’re forced to pay twice as much money to gain a customer.

I run my blogs on a blogspot and I find optimizing my blogs very difficult. The amount of comments I receive really messes up my SEO activities and I end losing valuable visitors.
